If you are unable to work because of an illness or injury, you should file for Social Security Benefits.  To start the process you must go to any Social Security office and file an application for benefits.  The Social Security Administration will contact your doctors and obtain your medical records. 

If you have been turned down for benefits you have (60) days to request a reconsideration or a formal hearing before an administrative law judge.
